    Warm temperatures over the past week have kept the upper two feet of the snowpack loose and wet. Fortunately, overnight temperatures have been just cool enough—combined with a light breeze—to refreeze the top few inches of the snowpack. The higher you go in elevation, the thicker this diurnal refreeze crust tends to be. Last night followed a similar pattern, with a light refreeze around the 5,000-foot level and a more substantial crust forming at higher elevations.

    This refreeze is important because the wet loose avalanche hazard increases throughout the day as temperatures rise and the crust begins to melt. If you find the snow becoming "punchy," especially if you’re sinking in deeper than your boots, it’s likely too late in the day to safely travel in avalanche terrain.

    Plan to start early—your goal should be to move through the backcountry while the surface crust is still firm and supportable. Watch for signs of warming such as rollerballs, pinwheels, or slopes that have been exposed to direct sun for extended periods. If you observe these conditions, it’s a good idea to change your plan and shift to a cooler, shadier aspect.

    With temperatures continuing to stay near or above freezing, the possibility of wet slab avalanches remains. What begins as small, loose wet slides in steep terrain can easily evolve into more dangerous and destructive wet slab avalanches, especially as the snow becomes increasingly saturated. Near tree line is the most likely elevation to find this problem as it has maintained a sweet spot between the extremes both above and below. It has seen greater snow totals than lower elevations with temperatures low enough to preserve layering, but also temperatures warm enough to allow moisture to saturate the upper snowpack.

    Wet slab avalanches today have the potential to be large and consequential—capable of knocking you off your feet, burying you, or carrying you significant distances. To reduce your risk, aim to complete your travel on steep or sun-exposed slopes early in the day. Ideally, be off terrain steeper than 30 degrees by mid-morning. Also take into account slope orientation. North-facing and shaded slopes are less likely to experience rapid warming and generally present a lower risk for wet slab formation. As always, careful route selection, timing, and observation of conditions are key to safe mountain travel in spring-like conditions.

Avalanche Discussion

Spring in the mountains brings longer days, warmer temperatures, and the promise of great corn snow—but it also marks a shift in avalanche conditions. Timing is everything this time of year. Plan to start your tours early while the snow surface is still firm from the overnight refreeze. As the sun rises and temperatures warm, the snowpack softens quickly, and avalanche risk—particularly from wet loose slides—rises sharply. A solid overnight freeze is key to safer spring travel. When the surface crust is strong enough to support your weight in the morning, it can delay the onset of instability. If the freeze is weak or absent, expect conditions to deteriorate rapidly, sometimes even in the morning hours. Look for higher elevations to maximize your window of safe travel.

Pay attention to clear signs that the snow is losing strength. Rollerballs, pinwheels, deep boot penetration, or breaking through a crust into wet mush are strong indicators that it's time to move to safer terrain. Aspect plays a big role in the timing of snow softening. South and east-facing slopes typically warm first and should be your early-day targets, while north and west-facing aspects often hold better conditions later into the day. Expect variable snow—spring conditions can deliver melt-freeze crusts, perfect corn, and isothermal slush all on the same tour, especially as you transition between elevations and aspects.

Weather also plays a critical role. Cloud cover, wind, and new snow can all affect melt-freeze cycles. For example, cloudy nights can trap warmth and prevent a good freeze, leading to softer, less stable snow at sunrise. Also, don’t overlook cornices—spring warming can weaken them, making collapse more likely. Give them a wide berth from above and below, as they can trigger large avalanches on slopes beneath.

As always, go into the day with a solid plan and a backup. Flexibility is key in the spring, when snowpack conditions can change quickly. Keep your objectives realistic, monitor conditions as they evolve, and be willing to adjust your route or turn back if things aren’t lining up. With thoughtful timing and awareness, spring can offer some of the season’s best and safest snowmobiling and skiing. On Friday, the forecast staff witnessed a group of two snowmobiling and snowboarding in avalanche terrain with NO avalanche rescue gear (beacon, shovel, or probe) and descending steep terrain solo and without eyes on each other. Proper backcountry protocol is still prudent to not only your group, but to other groups recreating around you, even during spring conditions. PERIOD.
