In sintesi

Above freezing temperatures overnight with continued warm temperatures and clear skies today will cause wet snow avalanches on steep terrain in the early afternoon once the snow becomes wet and unstable. Monitor snow surfaces, and choose lower angle slopes away from the sun when you encounter wet, unsupportable, and mushy snow surfaces.  Be aware that larger avalanches are possible on steeper sustained slopes in confined features such as gullies that can entrain larger amounts of snow.

    Warm temperatures and clear skies will make natural and human triggered wet snow avalanches, primarily loose snow, possible on steep slopes across all aspects. Temperatures remained above freezing (30-40°F)  in the mountains last night. Therefore, snow will destabilize quicker on slopes facing the sun than previous days. Avalanches will be more likely on terrain surrounded by rocks where the sun heats up surrounding snow surfaces.  Shallow wet slab avalanches are also possible on upper elevation wind loaded terrain failing on old, firm wind slabs including northerly aspects. Watch for clear signs of the snow destabilizing such as sinking deep into wet snow or if you see roller balls and pinwheels.

    Small wet snow avalanches are possible on steep isolated terrain in lower elevations even during low avalanche danger.

    Cornices: Large cornice falls are possible with the warmest temperatures all season. Avoid exposure below cornices and give them a wide margin of safety on ridgelines where they can break further back than expected.

Spring is Here

Expect different conditions today than yesterday as the snow will lack a solid overnight freeze. A light superficial freeze of the snow surface last night will break down quickly as the snow becomes unstable and wet quicker in the day. Steep east slopes will warm first followed by south and then west. Wet snow avalanches are still possible even after numerous wet avalanche cycles. Northerly aspects where the snow has remained dry will remain suspect as we experience some of the warmest temperatures all season today. Cloud cover is expected to increase in the afternoon which could help keep conditions from deteriorating. Monitor snow surfaces and avoid steep, consequential terrain once the snow becomes wet and unstable. Remember that steeper and more complex terrain can cause larger, more consequential avalanches where you can find trouble. Enjoy the sunshine and spring corn harvest while staying safe out there.

Travel Message: Access to the terrain is becoming more difficult as snowmobile trails and lower elevations quickly melt.
