In sintesi

For Monday, triggering an avalanche will continue to be possible on lee aspects. Look for signs of wind slabs such as rounded, smooth, and pillow like features often below ridgelines and areas that catch snow. If you see any red flags such as recent avalanches and/or cracking, give yourself a larger margain of safety by sticking to slopes lower than 30 degrees.

With around 8" of new storm snow on Sunday and a few more inches possible Sunday night, we will see some fresh wind slabs form on lee slopes. Winds will be moderate Sunday evening and then light on Monday with primarily westerly winds.

While traveling, look for safe test slopes to assess for cracking and/or small wind slabs. Safe test slopes, around 35-45 degrees, are great to stomp on to look for signs of instability.

With a break in the weather, be cautious heading into the alpine on larger terrain features. Consider easing into the terrain and look for signs of instability. If in doubt, stick to less consequential terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

On Sunday, I toured Tam McArthur Rim and observed wind slab avalanches on north and northeast aspects. I also found cracking on a few steep indicator slopes while traveling around. While touring, the winds were very strong and slopes were actively wind loading . Some areas had wind slabs lower down in the terrain due to the strong winds. Cross loaded slopes were also found.

Within the new storm snow I did find some lower densisty snow with firmer heavier snow above. This likely contributed to some of the avalanche activity we observed. Some slopes had reactive wind slabs while other slopes were stubborn.
