Avalanche Activity

Slabs of wind-blown snow on old snow represent the main danger

In all mountain ranges, only a low avalanche danger (1st level) is declared above the treeline. Between 0 and 20 cm of snow fell during the last snowfall period. Snowfall was concetrated in the eastern part of the High Tatras. East and north-easterly winds caused the formation of small snow slabs on the western, south-western and southern slopes. Avalanche danger is only in isolated places, mainly steep narrow gullies. Due to the below-average snow cover, only small avalanches or avalanches may occur, mainly in places where older snow is still present. Their danger lies mainly in pushing the victim into exposed or rocky terrain.

Snowpack Structure

Overall snow cover in the mountains is below average. Mostly it is only 10 to 40 cm. In addition, it is very unevenly distributed. There is very little to no snow on the eastern and south-eastern slopes. There may be more snow on the western and south-western slopes and above the treeline and in narrow gullies. Smaller slabs and snow pillows of blown snow may be found here, lying on top of a layer of older, frozen snow. The snow of the last snowfall may be poorly bonded to the old snow.
