Avalanche Activity

SC 09.03 Moderately bonded windslab, wind sheltered locations on W through N to E aspects above 900m. Cornices! Av.Hazard - Moderate

Forecast Snow Stability: Moderately bonded windslab will form in wind sheltered locations on West through North to East aspects above 900 metres with fragile cornices present above these slopes. Deepest amounts will be encountered in sharply defined features such as gully tops, corrie rims, steep burn lines and behind sheltering ridges. Elsewhere the snow will be well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Light snow during the evening above 850 metres. After a dry morning, sleet above 900 metres or wet snow on the highest summits, during the afternoon. Severe gale force, generally Southerly winds throughout. 800 metre freezing level initially, rising to 1150 metres by early afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: A dry and partly cloudy day with some sunshine. Storm force South-Easterly winds this morning, easing to gale force during the afternoon. Freezing level around 600 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Redistributed deposits have formed windslab in wind sheltered locations on West through North to North-East aspects above 900 metres. Small fragile cornices have formed above these slopes. Distribution is localised but the deposits are poorly bonded, failing easily under additional load. Areas worst affected are defined gully tops, corrie rims, steep burn lines etc. Elsewhere the snow is wind scoured, firm and icy. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
