In sintesi

Large wind slabs remain a concern on wind sheltered terrain features and beneath steeper areas. Winds will also be redistributing recent snowfall into leeward facing terrain, forming stiff layers of compacted snow. Assess these slabs for signs of cracking before committing to travel through them. Natural avalanches are unlikely today but human-triggering of one of these slabs is possible. This wind deposited snow is likely to be upside down in nature, with firmer snow over softer weaker snow. These areas of unstable snow are likely to be stubborn to human triggering and should be assessed carefully. MODERATE avalanche danger exists today.

    Slabs of wind affected snow that formed during and after the storm Monday and Tuesday remain a concern due to the size and thickness of the slabs combined with several different bed surfaces that have a poor track record of bonding to snow above. Field work indicates that these slabs appear to be bonded in many areas and likely be mostly settled to a large degree due to warming temperatures yesterday. In some places these slabs were quite thick and may still be reactive particularly in steep areas with a slicker bonding surface beneath. Slabs of wind drifted snow could be 1 to 2 feet thick and may break above you. Assess this snow carefully if you are moving around in the terrain today. Shifting wind directions combined with crossloading have distributed these slabs in multiple aspects across elevations.

    Less wind affected snow exists at middle and lower elevatons and is up to 14" deep. Collapsing has been reported at the ground in thinner areas too.. Steep areas at lower elevations should be assessed for wind and temperature affect which could cause the new snow to behave like a slab. 

Avalanche Discussion

Winds have wrapped around the compass rose this week during and after heavy snowfall on Monday night and Tuesday. Northern aspects contained mostly unreactive wind slabs prior to that storm as well. A widespread natural avalanche cycle occurred during that storm with areas of new snow and wind slabs that did not avalanche naturally then, remain as the primary avalanche concern today. Avalanche activity was observed in a number of lower elevation areas such as the south facing slabs of Mount Willard yesterday. A small avalanche was also reported to slide to the ground on Feb 1st along with whumpfing at another location yesterday, both observations were outside of our forecast area. 

A solo skier who was reported missing Tuesday evening was found yesterday evening. The individual was deeply buried in a terrain trap beneath the main gully of the Ammonoosuc Ravine. MWAC staff, Mountain Rescue Service members and Fish and Game Conservation Officers extend our sincerest condolences to friends and family.
