Especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls: The fresh snow as well as all the wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant. Backcountry touring calls for careful route selection. In steep rocky terrain and on sunny slopes occasionally large natural avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.
20 to 30 cm of snow, and up to 50 cm in some localities, fell on Sunday. Especially in the areas bordering Piedmont. The wind was light to moderate adjacent to ridgelines. Over a wide area new snow is lying on the soft surface of an old snowpack. Or on crusts. Towards its surface, the snowpack is weak in some cases; its surface consists of faceted crystals. Weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes. Especially adjacent to ridgelines in all aspects: Over a wide area snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.
The weather conditions will facilitate a gradual strengthening of the near-surface layers in particular on sunny slopes.
