Avalanche Activity

Increase in avalanche danger in the course of the day. The snow sport conditions outside marked and open pistes are to some extent precarious.

As a consequence of new snow and stormy weather individual natural avalanches are possible as the day progresses, even medium-sized ones. Avalanche prone locations for dry avalanches are to be found in particular on steep west, north and east facing slopes above the tree line, also on steep shady slopes in areas close to the tree line. Single winter sport participants can release avalanches very easily. The avalanche prone locations are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility, caution is to be exercised in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain, as well as at the base of rock walls. Extensive experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and great restraint are important. As a consequence of the heavy precipitation gliding avalanches and wet snow slides are to be expected, especially on steep grassy slopes below the tree line.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 20 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall. As a consequence of a strong to storm force wind from southwesterly directions, avalanche prone wind slabs will form. The fresh wind slabs are lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack in particular on northwest to north to northeast facing aspects. They are lying on soft layers on shady slopes. This applies in particular at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions. New snow is lying on a moist old snowpack. This applies below the tree line. Above the tree line snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.

Tendency

The snow sport conditions outside marked and open pistes are to some extent precarious.
