Avalanche Activity

GC for 21/1. Instabilities N through E to S mainly above 950m. Cornice collapse. W aspects better stability. Considerable hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Instabilities that exist in recent windslab accumulations will persist. There will be a period of instability as the temperature rises, precipitation turns to rain and cornices become prone to collapse and may trigger the slopes below. Areas most affected will be steep North through East to South aspects above 900 metres. Westerly aspects will have better stability. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Patchy showers throughout the day will initially fall as summit snow before turning to rain at all levels. The freezing level will rise above the summits. Winds will be strong Southerly. Observed Weather Influences: A dry sunny and cold day. Winds were light Easterly. Freezing at most levels. ObservedSnowStability: Instabilities are persisting in windslab accumulations, particularly where firm windslab overlies a weaker layer. Greatest accumulations are on North through East to South aspects above 900 metres with gullies, coire rims and scarp slope particularly affected. Fragile cornices are present above all these aspects. Slopes scoured by the recent westerly winds are becoming icy and stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
