Avalanche Activity

Along the border with France the avalanche danger is considerable (level 3). In the other regions the avalanche danger is one level lower.

Caution is to be exercised adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas, in particular, along the border with France. In these regions the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent and the danger is level 3 (considerable). As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind, wind slabs formed. The new snow and wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant above approximately 2300 m. The danger of moist and wet avalanches will already exist in the early morning. Avalanches can also be triggered in the old snowpack and reach large size in isolated cases.

Snowpack Structure

The more recent wind slabs are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls in all aspects. Individual weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on shady slopes, especially on steep shady slopes above approximately 2400 m. As a consequence of rising temperatures and solar radiation a dangerous avalanche situation will develop.
