Avalanche Activity

TO 27/12 Unstable windslab on W through N to SE aspects above 700m. Avalanche Hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh deposits of moderately bonded windslab will develop on steep wind sheltered West to North aspects above 700 metres. Existing localised areas of unstable windslab will persist on North-East to South-East aspects generally above 700 metres. Wet snow instabilities will develop on all these aspects as the freezing level rises and snow turns to rain by mid afternoon. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Westerly winds will ease overnight before backing through South then East and increasing fresh to strong by mid-day. Snow showers dying out overnight then heavy snow showers are expected during the morning. These will turn to rain by mid-afternoon as the freezing level rises to around 1000 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Fresh to strong Westerly winds. Frequent and at times prolonged snow showers. The freezing level was around 400 metres with fresh snow lying well below this height. ObservedSnowStability: Fresh deposits of unstable windslab continue to build on North-East to South-East aspects above 700 metres. Instabilities are localised affecting wind sheltered locations such as corrie headwalls, gully lines and below ridge crests. Otherwise, there is a dusting of fresh snow on all aspects above 200 metres. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
