You can easily trigger an avalanche that breaks near the ground on many slopes. The recent storm snow settled into a slab 1 to 3 feet thick, on a weak base. Wind-drifted slopes above around 11,000 feet are the most dangerous because the slabs are thicker, stiffer, and can run further. You can trigger an avalanche from a distance away, so give large avalanche paths a lot of room. Wind-sheltered low-angled slopes offer the safest and softest conditions.
