In sintesi
Conditions are generally stable, and large avalanches are unlikely. Watch for pockets of wind-drifted snow at upper elevations. You could trigger small loose snow avalanches in extreme terrain.
Avalanche Discussion
Conditions are generally stable, and avalanches are unlikely. However, LOW danger doesn't mean no danger, and there are a few things to keep an eye on:
- Wet Snow: Clear skies, warm temperatures, and strong spring sun could soften and melt the snow surface today. You may find areas where dry snow is becoming wet for the first time—these are the areas where you could trigger small, wet loose slides. Natural avalanches are less likely but not impossible in very steep, sun-drenched terrain. Consider seeking cooler slopes if you encounter a wet, mushy snowpack, and pay attention to what's above you when traveling below very steep, sunny slopes.
- Dry Snow: In extreme terrain, you may find pockets of wind-drifted snow or could trigger small sluffs where dry snow sits above slippery crusts.
- Cornices: These have grown very large in recent weeks, and many are severely overhanging. Give them space when traveling along ridgelines.
Make a plan, carry the appropriate avalanche rescue gear, and travel with a skilled partner for a successful day in the mountains.
