In sintesi

While avalanches remain unlikely, "low danger" does not mean no danger, as we have been finding weak snow in the upper snowpack. This has been found primarily near and above treeline on northeast, north and northwest aspects. Look for clues of unstable snow such as whumpfing and cracking, and consider digging in the snow to investigate these layers.

On Saturday, I was able to coninue to find weak snow (rounding facets) down about 12" on northeast, north, and northwest apects. I observed these layers while touring on the eastern side of Broken Top between 7,400-8,000ft.  Extended column tests revealed propogation on this layer in multiple northerly aspects (propogation is a sign of instability).  I also observed two whumpfs which indicates the snowpack collapsing from my weight.

We have been finding multiple weak layers in the upper snowpack. If traveling near or above treeline on northerly aspects, be on the lookout for whumpfing, collapsing, and cracking. It is worth digging in the snowpack and doing some column tests to assess this layer. If you find signs of instabilities, move to lower angle terrain (under 30 degrees).

We have not seen any avalanches on this layer and likely will not until we get more snow.

Avalanche Discussion

On Saturday morning I found about 3" of dense/heavy snow that had fallen overnight. This snow was mostly unconsolidated and I did not find many wind slabs. With just a few inches of heavy snow and light winds forecasted, I do not expect wind slabs to develope. However, as always be on the look out for small pockets of unstable snow especially in consequential alpine terrain

Low snow conditions still exist. Use caution especially at lower elevations where many hazards and obstacles are still exposed.
