In sintesi

Avalanche activity will be unlikely on Thursday. Always observe the signs of unstable snow and adjust your terrain choice accordingly.

With slightly cooler temperatures and a little more cloud cover, this problem will be unlikely but still something to watch for at lower elevations. The low areas around Santiam Pass will get light rain overnight and at times during Thursday. Watch for the surface snow becoming wet and slushy to ankle deep or more. Rollerballs and pinwheels are the precursor to wet loose avalanches. Small avalanches can lead to bad outcomes in sustained steep terrain and above traps like cliffs and rocks.

Avalanche Discussion

Not much snow accumulation is expected over the next 24 hours. Watch for small, shallow, and isolated pockets of wind slabs forming; especially if we get more than an inch or two of snow accumulation.

Continue to be cautious of cornices when approaching ridge tops. Many cornices have broken off during the recent warm spell, but there are still some large ones out there in the mid and upper elevations. Avoid walking out onto a cornice and breaking through.
