Warm temperatures may create areas of unstable snow today. Watch for pockets of snow on steep slopes that may rapidly warm from some sunshine and above freezing temperatures. Roller balls, deeper boot penetration into heavy wet snow, and water within the snowpack are good indicators that the snowpack may be losing stability and cautious-route finding should be used.

    You could find small areas of unstable snow today on all aspects between 3000 and 5000 feet of elevation and on west, south and east aspects above 5000 feet. Warm temperatures and sunshine may produce small wet loose avalanches in steep terrain. Expect this hazard to increase in likelihood if sunshine remains later in the day or if the wind does not reach the upper forecasted speeds to assist in cooling the snowpack. Heads up travel will be needed to continuously assess the warming of the snow. If you are seeing roller balls, experiencing deeper boot penetration into heavy wet snow, wringing water out of the snow or noting more sunshine and warm temperatures, the snowpack is losing stability and the avalanche hazard is increasing.

Avalanche Discussion

The forecast area saw another 1.6 inches of new snow throughout the day yesterday with strong northwest winds developing new wind slabs in isolated areas throughout the terrain, but in general, a stable snowpack exists this morning.    

However, a warming trend begins today in the forecast area and uncertainty exists about how quickly the snowpack structure may weaken. Temperatures are forecast to be above freezing at the summit while even warmer temperatures are expected at lower elevations. If substantially more sun and lower wind speeds occur than forecast, the wet loose avalanche problem will increase in likelihood, increasing the hazard today. There is also the possibility that the hazard could change in avalanche problem type, especially with the onset of rain beginning this evening. Wind slabs that formed yesterday could transition to small wet slabs later today if water begins to percolate through the snowpack. 

To best assess the hazard today, continually assess the snow as you travel. Hand-shears will help assess the sensitivity of soft snow and allow you to see water within the snowpack. Make snowballs and see how easily they form or if you can wring water out of them. If you are seeing water when consolidating snow or while assessing the snow, seeing roller balls forming in steep terrain or getting deeper boot penetration into wet sticky snow, you are seeing the avalanche hazard increasing.

Note that the hazard will likely continue to increase tonight and into tomorrow with incoming precipitation and continued above freezing temperatures. With the snowpack stability decreasing, likely new avalanche problems will be developing. Use conservative terrain choices if you head out this evening as the snowpack will be losing stability throughout the next 24 hours.
