A slow cooling trend is helping the snowpack stabilize, but still consider wet avalanches possible on steep slopes below 6500 ft. Above this, be ready for icy travel and have the proper gear to reduce the chance of a long-sliding fall.

    The likelihood of triggering wet avalanches is slowly decreasing as freezing levels drop. However, it still remains possible below 6500 ft on slopes where you find wet, sloppy snow. As you travel, pay attention to boot penetration and avoid steep slopes if you notice your sinking past your ankles. Wet loose and slab avalanches are the most likely type - but still keep glide avalanches in mind if you notice large cracks at the snow surface. These large avalanches are tough to predict and worth considering as you move through terrain. 

    The best way to reduce your exposure to these wet avalanches will be to stick on slopes with a crust or avoid steep, open slopes with sloppy snow until the weather cools down.

Mt Hood has received over 4 inches of precipitation in the last 7 days, and unfortunately, much of this fell as rain. Weather stations have lost over 17 inches of snow since January 26th. This long warm-up left its mark on the terrain with widespread rain runnels extending to 9000 ft and plenty of wet avalanche debris littering canyon bottoms, and the run-out of most avalanche paths. 

Fortunately, snow levels are slowly dropping, and they should sit comfortably at 6,000 ft through Thursday. If you travel above this, be sure to pack the crampons, ice axe , and have the ability to arrest a fall. High winds and cooling temperatures will certainly transform our wet upper snowpack into a solid, slick surface. 

We may squeeze out 1-3" of fresh snow at the tail end of this system. If this snowfall materializes, expect to find shallow, isolated wind slabs on leeward slopes above 7000 ft. These slabs won't be large but may be easily triggered since they'll form on an icy surface.
