In sintesi

Precipitation will continue throughout the day and avalanche danger will slowly increase. At upper elevations, the new layer of dry snow could avalanche with a human trigger. Lower elevation snowpacks are now wet in the top several inches, and wet avalanche activity may continue. Avoid steep slopes in the backcountry on Monday.

    We're forecasted to receive a little under a foot of snow at upper elevations from overnight and during the day Monday. Dry snow should form fresh slabs at mid and upper elevations. You are most likely to trigger an avalanche in wind-loaded terrain. However, changes in temperature or snowfall intensity can create shallow instabilities in wind-protected terrain as well.

    Track the depth of new and wind-drifted snow over the old, wet surface below. You can evaluate how well the new slabs are bonding with simple tests like slope cuts, skin track tests, and hand shears. Blowing and drifting snow will show you which slopes could be wind-loaded. Stick to more sheltered, lower-angled terrain to reduce uncertainty during stormy conditions.

    Above-freezing temperatures and rainfall will persist at mid and lower elevations. Steep terrain holding wet snow should remain on your radar for now. Avalanches and other signs of instability are surefire signs that overhead terrain is about to shed snow. You are most likely to see this on rock slabs and cliffs, but any steep slope could still produce some sort of avalanche if provoked enough. Steer around slopes steeper than 35° while these warm, wet temepratures persist, and consider avoid terrain beneath steep slopes if you notice any natural shedding.

Avalanche Discussion

The current trend is continuing with mild temperatures and a slight increase in precipitation amounts on Monday. Lower elevations are receiving rain, upper elevations are getting snow. Neighboring West slopes zones saw wet loose avalanche activity at mid and lower elevations, and some dry slab avalanches resulted at higher elevations. We expect conditions were similar in the West Central zone, and it's what you can expect to continue on Monday.  If you're traveling into the West Central zone, be sure to check a neighboring zone's avalanche forecast, as information from this zone is limited.
