In sintesi

Natural large avalanches are expected today, especially in the upper elevations, with rapid loading of recent snow and wind creating dangerous avalanche conditions. Avoid steep terrain with warming temperatures and continued snowfall of 1-2 inches/hour. Watch for overhead hazards on terrain beneath steep slopes and obvious signs of instability such as cracking across all elevations if traveling in the mountains today.

    Recent snow combined with moderate to strong W/SW winds 20-30 mph will form reactive soft slabs 2-4 feet deep in the middle and upper elevations. Look for obvious signs of wind loaded terrain such as cracking, collapsing, stiffened surfaces, and large pillows/drifts. Expect wind slabs to be up to 4 feet deep on leeward and cross loaded terrain. These will be most reactive off ridgelines and open, exposed slopes. 

    Storm Slabs: The zone has received 14-27 inches of snow in the last 48 hours with another 12 inches possible today. Storm slabs 1-3 feet deep will be reactive across all elevations even in sheltered terrain with increasing temperatures today. Look for cracking of recent snow and stick to lower angle slopes.

    Recent snow will add stress to weak layers buried Feb 2nd overlying hard slabs 3-4 feet deep. Sensitivity of these weak layers has been most reactive on N to E aspects in the upper elevations on wind loaded terrain. Avalanches that failed on these weak layers five days ago all had the common characteristics of steep, convex, rocky, and wind affected terrain. Avoid these areas as the snowpack is rapidly loaded today. Use caution in the highlighted areas of the compass rose above due to uncertainty in the distribution and reactivity of these weak layers.

    Weak snow formed during an atypically long dry period in December is buried beneath hard slabs over 4 feet deep. Triggering an avalanche on these layers is unlikely as reactivity is approaching a dormant phase. Large avalanches involving new snow and persistent weak layers could step down to these deeper layers in steep and sustained terrain. This was seen on Feb 10th on Rendezvous Mtn as a result of a very large trigger from an avalanche above a cliff feature.

Avalanche Discussion

February continues to provide ample snow as the mountains are rapidly loaded. Focus on the information explained above to stay safe in the backcountry today. Due to dangerous avalanche conditions, careful route choices will be necessary to stick to lower angle slopes. Natural avalanches are most likely in the upper elevations, so beware of the terrain you are traveling beneath. Colder temperatures yesterday brought low density snow. Increased wind combined with warming temperatures today will drastically increase recent snow instability. The best way to manage this problem is to choose conservative terrain, especially as weak layers beneath recent snow are stressed. We’ve had an interesting winter to say the least. Let the snowpack adjust to the recent load as more snow is expected throughout the day and continuing tomorrow.
