A firm and refrozen snowpack creates hazardous slide-for-life conditions today on all steep snow-covered surfaces. Bring mountaineering tools like crampons, an ice axe, and a helmet, as well as the skills to use them. Sure footwork will be your best defense to prevent a fall, as self-arrest may be difficult on firm, steep surfaces.

These conditions offer a good time for you and any backcountry partners to have a conversation about risk. While it may be possible to ascend and descend steep slopes without a fall or injury, surfaces like this can be unforgiving with small margins for error. Take time to assess the consequences of a fall in the terrain you choose to travel on, as exposed rocks, trees, or open holes below you could amplify it. Consider starting with lower-angled slopes to both ascend and descend before committing to steeper terrain. 

Today, overcast skies and subfreezing temperatures mean that it is unlikely snow surfaces will soften. Continue to bring a mountaineering mindset along with mountaineering tools to increase your security while you travel on steep, snow and ice-covered slopes. 

Since Tuesday, the summit has recorded 0.7 inches of snow, while the Hermit Lake Caretaker has only recorded trace amounts of snow on Wednesday. Observations yesterday from Tuckerman Ravine did not find much evidence of new snow beyond small, isolated patches. These generally were well-bonded to the snow surface. New snow today is not likely to accumulate, but continue to assess as loose snow could contribute to causing a fall in steep terrain.

Monday’s rain, above freezing temperatures, and fog continued to drive the development of various mountain hazards that should be factored into your decision-making and route planning. Large, deep, and open holes exist in many places. One of the most consequential open holes is near The Lip in Tuckerman Ravine.
