In sintesi

The Wind Slab avalanche problem from our latest storm will linger into Wednseday.  Avalanches will continue to be possible at treeline and in the alpine on slopes where the wind has blown our most recent snow.  If folks are riding at these higher elevations it is worth evaluating the depth and cohesion (slabbiness) of the snow on any seemingly soft slopes below ridgelines.  While dangerous avalanches are unlikely below treeline, continue to use safe travel techniques and identify terrain traps.

    Today I observed a D1 Wind Slab on a NE slope at treeline (see picture).  Shifting wind directions mean that a variety of aspects could be wind loaded.  During the 24 hours before dawn on Wednseday the wind will have blown from the North and West, and may even shift to Southwest on Wednseday afternoon, which means Wind Slabs are possible on most slopes excepting West.

    Look for recent cornice growth, snow textures that may indicate recent blowing snow, and then slopes with deeper or slabbier snow as clues to which slopes might be the most dangerous.

Avalanche Discussion

Storm totals from our last storm are in the 35-45cm range.  Observations from Tuesday indicate that the snow is more cohesive than I anticipated, but I haven't heard of any significant avalanche activity below treeline.  Shifting winds were redistributing the soft snow on Tuesday at treeline and above.
