In sintesi

Avalanche danger remains at LOW. It is possible that strong to extreme SW winds have created fresh, unstable wind slabs above treeline.

Southwest winds have been strong and increasing in speed for 24 hours in the Mammoth region. Wind sensors in other areas have been recording lower speeds, but it is assumed that most areas have seen winds strong enough to transport snow forming small fresh wind slabs, especially above tree-line. Previous wind events, warm temperatures and strong sun have stripped and melted many major S and SW facing slopes leaving less loose snow for transport given our current wind direction. However, locally terrain driven winds may pick up just enough soft snow in surprising places to cross load features, and form isolated wind slabs in high starting zones. Be particularly mindful of mid-slope terrain features such as gully sidewalls and beneath rock bands harboring fresh wind deposits.

Avalanche Discussion

Low avalanche danger does not mean no avalanche danger. Despite no recent snowfall, don’t underestimate the power of the wind and its ability to move snow. Watch for blowing snow today. That visual clue may be the first indication of the possibility for new wind slabs forming. Perform your own localized assessments of changing snow conditions to see if freshly blown snow is bonding to underlying surfaces.

We are in the midst of a somewhat dynamic weather week here in the Eastern Sierra as the official start to spring approaches. The wind will pick up with passing cold fronts today and Tuesday, with a stronger but fast-moving system expected over the weekend that brings the best chance for new snow.
