In sintesi

There was a decent refreeze last night and travel will by icy and firm throughout the early morning. As the day continues, temperatures will rise quickly and intense direct sun will mean wet loose avalanches are possible on all aspects and at all elevations. Continue to evaluate localized conditions by looking for rollerballs, pinwheels, and signs of recent avalanche activity. Avoid travel above and beneath cornices.

    An overnight refreeze in the snow will break down quickly as the temperatures rise and intense April sun beams down on all aspects. The optimal time for uphill travel is when the surface snow is still frozen. Sharps will be necessary for travel (crampons, ice axe, etc.). There will be an optimal time window for downhill travel, when snow is soft and fun, and not too wet. Rollerballs, pinwheels, deep ski and boot pen, and recent avalanche activity are all signs of the snow becoming dangerously wet. Plan to be off of slopes steeper than 35 degrees well before they are too wet.

    Cornices have been building all season. Overnight freezing and daytime warming helps contribute to the weakening of cornices, and cornice fall is likely on N, NE, and E aspects today. On ridgetops, solid earth may be several feet if not more from the cornice edge, and cornices often break further back than expected. Cornice fall is hard to predict and cornices should be given a wide berth from both above and below. 

Avalanche Discussion

Earlier in the week, freezing levels reached greater than 12000', meaning the BWRA has only begun to see decent to substantial refreezing in the last 48 hours. Wet loose avalanche activity has been observed on all aspects and at all elevations in the last week. Yesterday, south facing slopes displayed 5 - 15 cm of refreeze on top of feet of wet snow at 9000'.  Once the refreeze had warmed (around noon), travel was incredibly difficult. Snowbridges were collapsing, and I was slipping off the skintrack, and sinking up to my thighs whilst booting. Despite the wetness,  a light afternoon wind helped keep the snow from becoming dangerously wet. Be mindful that travel in the early hours will be icy and firm, and sharp tools will be a necessity with last night's refreeze. Today will be warmer than yesterday, and it is possible slopes will become dangerously wet. Watch for rollerballs, pinwheels, and deep ski and boot penetration. Time your day accordingly, and plan to be off of slopes steeper than 35 degrees well before they are too wet. 

In the high alpine, glide cracks could be seen from a distance away in cirques, and steep rocky terrain, and travel on slopes above and beneath these cracks should be avoided. Freezing temperatures overnight and warm daytime temperatures can also promote rockfall. Avoid traveling beneath large rock features as the temperatures rise, and be sure to wear helmets if travel is absolutely necessary. Cornice fall is also hard to predict, but it is more likely with warm daytime temperatures. Give cornices a wide berth from both above and below.

Creek crossings may be a hazard, especially near the end of the day as flow rates increase, and snowbridges are becoming less reliable. 

Last but not least, don't forget to reapply sunscreen!
