In sintesi

Avalanche activity is unlikely today.  Unlikely but not impossible. Keep your awareness in steep, north facing, shaded terrain features that may have high consequence.

Stay cautious in steep-shaded, leeward-wind protected, north facing slopes, that were low enough in elevation to get a rain crust to form during the beginning of our last storm cycle.  But high and shaded enough to stay cold since last Saturday (1/3)  when the rain line was fluctuating.   This very isolated terrain has a very small potential for holding/establishing a weak layer that has been given mix column test results this week.  But we haven't seen any recent avalanches or signs of surface instability since the storm ended.

This next week as temps go into a diurnal freeze/thaw cycle. Look for newly forming roller balls during the heat up of the day and morning surface crusts.  This overall should have a positive effect on the snow pack, helping consolidation with these isolated suspecting mid elevation layers.

Avalanche Discussion

  • Warming temps this week should help consolidate the snowpack even further.
  • The 2 rain crusts and potential weak layers we were tracking this week are becoming more isolated and harder to find.
  • Temperatures the past 2 days have been colder than forecasted, with the help of a NE wind keeping things chilled.
  • As temps increase the next few days, Wet Loose potential increases. By tomorrow and Tuesday this coming week, it may become a problem on sun exposed slopes at lower and mid elevations and remain as daytime temperatures get into the high 40's.
  • There will be a small surface sun crust on most solar exposed aspects as yesterday afternoon temps started to heat up and the upper elevation east wind subsided.
