There may be just enough dry snow at upper elevations to form shallow wind slabs. Look for actively blowing snow or fresh drifts to identify wind-loaded features to avoid. Elsewhere, you'll likely find a few inches  over a firm crust.

    At the highest elevations, there may be just enough dry snow that shallow slabs could exist. Look for actively blowing snow, fresh drifts, textured surfaces, or new cornices to determine loading patterns. You can feel for changes in the depth of snow over the crust to help identify wind-loaded features to avoid. They'll be more common on leeward ridgelines, on convex features, or near rocky outcrops such as the base of cliffs or confined chutes.

Avalanche Discussion

Several waves of precipitation and wind have slowly increased the depth over a series of melt-freeze crusts at Snoqualmie Pass this week. While these storm totals are modest by winter standards or on their own, cumulatively, there should be just enough snow and wind to consider small avalanches at upper elevations. On Saturday, any potential avalanche should be confined to the snow above the most recent melt-freeze crust. 

On Friday, NWAC forecasters found progressively drier and deeper snow over a melt-freeze crust as they ascended in elevation. No new avalanches were reported, but the snow did slide on the underlying crust. The resulting loose slides were not large enough to be called consequential.

Despite the winter-like landscape, it's definitely spring. Earlier this week, warm temperatures and sunshine resulted in a wet avalanche cycle. Now that we have dry snow on the surface again, all it takes is a few sun breaks or thin clouds for dry avalanche problems to transition to wet problems. If you see new rollerballs or the snow surface is moist, put wet slides on your radar and head for shadier slopes. 

Lower elevations will likely have more travel hazards than avalanche potential. Although open holes/creeks, shallowly buried rocks, and refrozen avalanche debris are more prevalent down low, they litter the landscape at all elevations.
