In sintesi

It will be possible to trigger avalanches 1-2 feet deep in steep terrain today. Previously wind loaded slopes are the most likely areas to find unstable snow. Consequences remain high due to shallow coverage. Rocks, logs and vegetation lurk just below the surface, increasing the potential for injury.

    Slabs that formed over a week ago sit on top of weak snow. Triggering these slabs is becoming less likely, but the possibility remains. Slab depths are in the 1-2 foot range, with previously wind-loaded slopes holding the thicker slabs.  Watch for areas where the wind built thick, firm pillows as you ride.  Obvious signs of instability such as shooting cracks and collapsing, may not present until you trigger an avalanche. Ride one at a time across steep terrain, use islands of safety when stopping and communicate your plans with your partners. Terrain traps like creek beds and steep slopes above road cuts are common on Togwotee and should be viewed as suspect.

It looks like Santa is a day late with the next storm - that's OK, he's been working overtime recently, and I can wait one more day for powder. The next storm is on our doorstep and could add a significant load to the snowpack over the weekend.  Thin, early-season conditions still exist on Togwotee. The slab of snow formed in mid-December sits over a very weak layer of facets in most locations. Investigate the snowpack while you are out today - the weak snow should be easy to find if you trench your sled. Continue to travel one at a time through avalanche terrain and consider the consequences of getting caught.  Watch for shallow coverage, rocks, and logs on your way back to the plum pudding.
