Wind speeds start to increase Monday night and throughout Tuesday. Many exposed slopes are already wind affected, which could make it harder to blow snow around and form new slabs. However, the expected wind speeds look very, very strong. Sometimes stronger winds result in more erratic loading patterns, slabs forming well below ridgelines, and crossloading mid slope gullies. The blowing snow hitting you in the face will leave little doubt about the source of the hazard. Then watch for pockets of firmer snow that often appear smooth and fat. Steer around these steep, loaded slopes.
Precipitation increases later in the day, and the new snow may only accelerate the fresh wind slab development. As a result, avalanches could become larger in the afternoon. This should also correspond to a bump in temperatures, creating an up-side-down nature to the slabs. Towards the end of the day, conditions may become more dangerous, particularly at higher elevations and on Mt Rainier.
