Conditions are generally stable, and avalanches are unlikely. It has been 3 weeks since our last significant snowfall and over 2 weeks since our last reported avalanches. Be wary of hard wind drifts and small slabs in extreme terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Happy final day of January! What a dichotomous month it has been... We started off strong with a week-long 2-3" SWE storm, then switched gears and held cool and dry for 3 weeks. Despite the lack of moisture over the past few weeks, there is good coverage throughout the three northern zones of the forecast area thanks to moderately cool temperatures. The consistency of the weather has also led to general stability throughout the region, and soft, sugary snow still lingers on many protected, shady slopes.

Even though we haven't had much recent avalanche activity, we're still keeping our heads on a swivel in extreme terrain, because big terrain always has big consequences. If you're out enjoying the mountains this weekend, think about where even a small avalanche could carry you before committing to consequential, previously wind-loaded slopes. Here are a few specific things to consider when planning your day in the mountains:

Wind Slabs: Most wind slabs have stabilized and are not sensitive to the weight of skiers or snowmobilers. That said, pay attention in very steep terrain where hard wind slabs may overlie weak, sugary faceted snow. The "hard slabs over facets" can sound or feel hollow or "drummy". They are most widespread in alpine terrain. You'll commonly find them in chutes and couloirs or on large exposed alpine faces. Old, weathered hard slabs are typically triggered near rocks (buried or exposed) or on the edges where the slab thins to less than 2 feet thick. 

Cornices: Some cornices are very large, and many are sagging or overhanging. It can be difficult to tell where solid ground stops and the cornice starts; give them space when traveling on ridgelines. Falling cornices can be great triggers for wind slabs below them due to their sheer size.

It's easy to let your guard down during extended LOW danger. Good travel habits will continue to help you reduce your risk of small unexpected avalanches. 

  • Always have a plan: Discuss route options, decision points, and off-limits terrain before heading out.
  • Bring the gear: Ensure you have a functioning transceiver, shovel, and probe. 
  • Monitor conditions: Is the wind transporting more snow than expected?
  • Look for obvious signs of instability: Cracking, collapsing, or recent avalanches indicate that avalanches are possible.
  • Expose one person at a time in steep terrain.
