Watch for dense, textured drifts on steep leeward slopes near and above treeline. Avoid triggering avalanches below ridgelines and cross-loaded gullies by sticking to sheltered slopes. Manage loose sluffs by avoiding confined chutes with terrain traps below.

    Shifting winds Sunday deposited soft drifts on all aspects near and above treeline. Winds were steadily northeast over the past 24 hours and likely added to existing slabs on south and west aspects below ridgetops and high peaks. Cold temperatures will slow the healing of even older wind slabs. Be particularly cautious in areas with higher snow totals from Sunday’s storm. This includes higher elevations and areas closer to the Mammoth Crest. Watch for rippled snow that’s suddenly deeper and denser than the fluff in sheltered areas. It may crack around you, or you may feel yourself breaking through stiffened surface snow into softer snow underneath. Be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions.

    Cold temperatures overnight and this morning will keep surface snow soft and unconsolidated. Sluffs could be larger on steep protected slopes where the most snow fell Sunday night. While surface instabilities will be more likely in sheltered areas near and below treeline, we can't rule out the possibility in protected areas above treeline. Loose-dry avalanches will be most concerning in areas with terrain features that elevate the consequences of an avalanche. Watch out for road cuts, gully features, or cliffs below you. Avoid very steep, confined terrain where you can’t let moving snow pass you by.

    Small, intentionally triggered loose dry avalanche

Small natural and human-triggered loose dry avalanches were reported across the region yesterday. Forecasters triggered small, soft wind slab avalanches and shooting cracks in drifted snow near treeline over the past 48 hours. 

Very cold temperatures slow down settlement and bonding in the surface snow and little change is expected for the hazard today. Blowing snow from northeast winds increased across the Mammoth Crest and the higher peaks of the range yesterday afternoon.

The recent snow is very low density and rests atop old hard wind and sun crusts in exposed areas. In sheltered terrain, weak faceted snow lies underneath. The mid-pack is generally strong and right-side up. The snowpack is deep with the exception of lower elevations in the southern part of the forecast zone where snow depths are between 3 and 5 feet. 

Today will be the coldest morning of the week. Continued ridgetop winds will be chilly. It will be worth considering the dangers of exposure and planning accordingly by bringing extra warm layers and equipment to prepare for the elements. Dealing with unforeseen equipment malfunctions or injuries could be a bitterly cold affair.
