In sintesi

Triggering an avalanche will be possible. With increasing winds, wind slabs could build in size into Sunday. Plan to evaluate lee slopes carefully when traveling near and above treeline.

Keep loose dry avalanches in mind if you are venturing into steep and tight lines. In the right terrain, these could flush down and entrain fast moving snow.

    The wind is expected to pick up Saturday night and into Sunday along with more snow falling. There will be plenty of soft snow available for transport. At the time of writing this, the wind speed at the Moon Mountain station has bumbped up to 18 mph out of the WSW. Windslabs will have to potential to become larger than we have seen recently. Watch for wind slabs below ridgetops and features that collect wind blown snow. Look for visual clues that wind slabs are present such as a wavy or uneven surface texture.

    By Sunday morning we could have 8-9 inches of light snow sitting atop a crust and more by the end of the day. As long as the snow stays light and cohesionless, it could run on top of the crust.  Loose dry avalanches will be small, but could entrain enough snow in steep terrain to knock a person off their stance and go for a ride. 

Avalanche Discussion

We do not have an abundance of observations from Saturday and there have been no reports of avalanche activity.  The main concerns in the snowpack are related to surface condtions. The recent snow came in light and cold and did not initially glue down the the crust that formed earlier in the weak. More snow coming in Saturday night and Sunday may add to the current problems, although the models are showing some variety in how much snow will land on the ground between now and Sunday afternoon. Below the recent storm snow/crust, there are no buried weak layers we are currently montioring.
