Salt River and Wyoming Ranges

The general avalanche hazard is Low above 9000 feet. In areas where old snow lies, new and recent snow could be triggered as loose snow sloughs or small soft slabs in isolated areas. This hazard will increase as more snow arrives today. The old snow, which is deepest in higher, northerly terrain, is comprised of crusts and well developed faceted snow, including surface hoar. This old snow will continue to be a concern as the snowpack grows but has seen limited loading at this time. Avalanches are not possible where recent snow fell on bare ground.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )The next round of snowfall is expected to start in the early morning with snow continuing through the day on Wednesday. This system is expected to favor the Teton and Wyoming ranges with two to five inches possible at the higher elevations by the evening. Temperatures that are to drop below zero in the mountains are to have highs in the low teens while varying winds remain relatively light with five to twenty mile per hour averages. In the valleys, temperatures are to again swing from the single digits to the twenties. The general avalanche danger will remain Moderate in the Togwotee Pass area where loose snow sloughs and small wind slabs could be human triggered in steep terrain. In that area, more new snow has fallen and the old faceted snow cover is more prevalent. The danger will remain Low in the Teton and Southwest Trails areas where similar hazards exist in isolated areas. Predicted new snowfall and moderate winds will increase the chance for loose snow sloughing and for triggering small soft slabs as the day progresses.
