You can trigger an avalanche where you find recently windblown snow accumulating. Steer around lee slopes steeper than 35 degrees, freshly formed cornices, and pillow-like drifts. On sun-exposed slopes keep in mind the possibility of loose avalanches.

    Reports from mountain professionals tell us that the winds are redistributing recent snow and forming wind slabs near and above treeline. If you travel in the backcountry Sunday, look for evidence of windblown snow and steer away from slopes where it has accumulated. Firm and textured snow, cornices, and collapsing or "whumphing" sounds in the snow are evidence that you could trigger a wind slab on similar aspects. Stick to wind-scoured ridgelines and to slopes less than 35 degrees to help you navigate around freshly formed wind slabs.

    Small wind slabs like this will be common. Use clues such as these fresh cornices to avoid slopes where larger wind slabs will linger.

Avalanche Discussion

Mt Hood received a good shot of snow Christmas day and the wind has redistributed it into fresh wind slabs. Look for and steer around wind effected snow on steep slopes. Warming due to sunshine will be limited near the solstice, but slopes receiving a good dose of sunshine may be prone to loose wet avalanches on Sunday. If you notice roller balls forming on the surface of the snow seek out lower angle and shadier terrain to avoid triggering a loose wet avalanche.

Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
