Weak layers lurk 1-5 feet below dense slabs. It has been a week since the last loading event. As a result the likelihood of triggering an avalanche has gone down significantly. Due to the potential size and depth of these avalanches, the consequences remain severe. Typical warning signs such as collapsing or shooting cracks are less likely to occur. Avalanches at these depths will require large triggers or smaller triggers finding thin spots in a slab. Steep, open and unsupported slopes will be the most likely terrain to encounter a slab that will be reactive to human triggers today.
