In sintesi

The main avalanche concern going into the weekend is going to be wet avalanche problems. When the sun comes out, expect the snowpack to heat up and the potential for loose wet slides to increase.  Manage your terrain choices by hitting the sun exposed aspects early and moving around to north facing as it heats up.

    Temperatures today look to be getting a little over freezing up high, but with partly cloudy skies it should take it a while to heat up.  If it does clear off nice and sunny, expect to get out of sun exposed avalanche terrain earlier.  Saturday and Sunday are predicted to be even warmer, so the danger is going to increase.  Watch for rollerballs and pinwheels.  There is lots of new snow in the trees from Wednesday and Thursday, so when you start seeing treebombs that entrain a bunch of snow after they hit, it's time to get out of that avalanche terrain.

    Yesterday we found lingering wind slabs between the interface of the last two storms and small new ones on the ridges.  They weren't very thick and they weren't very reactive, but it's a good reminder that when we receive new snow, we still have new snow problems.  Use caution when entering steep terrain at the higher elevations. 

Avalanche Discussion

April 2nd will be the last forecast for the season.  

March is apparently trying to catch up in snowfall for what it lacked at the beginning of the month!  The Wednesday-Thursday storm came in pretty warm and had good bonding to the snow underneath.  It was already settled by the time we left the field yesterday.  We did unfortunately get a thin ice crust across a lot of the forecast region that made it not the blower power that backcountry dreams are made up, but it was still skiable and more enjoyable on a snowmobile. The north aspects are holding about a 100 cm more snow and still are behaving like winter. The deep buried persistent weak layer with the January crust is down there, but not worried about it right now.  Eventually, when that side starts heating up it might become a problem again.  The ice crust has still not broken down completely on the other aspects, so if we get a bunch or rain or really hot temperatures, we could be seeing wet slabs on that layer.  Other spring problems to keep your eyes on are cornices. They got a lot of new snow yesterday, which covered up any cracks at the tops that might have been starting to form.  Give them a wide berth as the temperatures heat up.  And now the glide cracks have even more weight on them as well.  Steer clear of those.
