In sintesi

Our thin weak snowpack is about to be tested this weekend.We could see 8" of new snow by Sunday afternoon accompanied by moderate winds .Then we could see up to 1/4" of rain Sunday into Sunday night.Expect to encounter delicate windslabs at and above treeline and wet slabs on steep,rain saturated snow.

    Throughout my tour yesterday in the Northern Elkhorns I found evidence of crust layers sandwiched between faceted layers in the upper snowpack.These layers failed with moderate force in my snow pit tests.Failures were noticed at crust/facet (sugar snow) interfaces.No propagation was observed.Other than evidence of wind loading,no other red flags were observed.By Sunday evening we could be looking at 8" or more of new snow.At this time rain is in the forecast for Sunday night.Rain,especially on new snow,has a very destabilizing effect on that snow.If we get enough rain it could percolate down to one of our crust layers greatly weakening the already tenuous bond at these crust/facet interfaces that we have in our snow pack.If you are recreating in the backcountry tomorrow and you notice: warming temperatures,roller balls on the snow surface,and rain it is time to get off and out from under terrain steeper than 35 degrees.

    The Norhtern Elkhorns are forecasted to receive 4" of new snow tonight and 4" of new snow during the day tomorrow.Wind is also in the forecast.Moderate southwest winds will accompany this new snow.With this combination of wind and new snow expect to see thick and reactive windslabs on steep (at or greater than 35 degrees)terrain at or above tree line.Be especially cautious at or near ridge lines that face north,northeast,and east.

Early season conditions exist in the form of rocks,logs,and open creeks.Some of these hazards are obvious,others not so obvious.Be aware of these hazards as you are recreating in the mountains this weekend.
