Numerous small avalanches were recently triggered in Rocky Mountain National Park. These small avalanches can take you off your feet, carrying big consequences in very steep terrain and couloirs.
Cracking in the surface snow is an indication to avoid steep slopes. Go around pillows of drifted snow where you find them below ridges, in gullies, and behind convex rollovers. You might not see any signs of instability before you trigger an avalanche. Avoiding these drifted slabs of snow is the best way to reduce your risk to avalanches.
