You can trigger an avalanche on steep slopes at high elevations. As the winds increase over the weekend, you may also see small avalanches at lower elevations. Use extra caution if you find more than about six inches of new or wind-drifted snow. You will find these drifts in gullies, below ridgelines, and around features that catch the snow. Supportive snow that feels hollow, cracks, or collapses are all signs that you could trigger an avalanche. You can find safer travel on lower-angled terrain or slopes where the wind is stripping the snow.
