Strong winds have drifted snow into thick slabs in the alpine. You could trigger an avalanche in the drifted snow. On north and northeast slopes, a buried weak layer may make avalanches larger or more reactive. Cracking and collapsing are indicators that you have found an unstable area of snow. If you observe these signs, move to a lower-angle slope or choose terrain that tilts south or west.
