Avalanche Activity

The wind slabs represent the main danger.

As a consequence of a moderate southwesterly wind, further wind slabs will form. Even single winter sport participants can release avalanches easily, including medium-sized ones. Such avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. In areas bordering France, especially at high altitudes, avalanches can be large. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger.

Snowpack Structure

In some localities 20 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell in the last two days. Since Thursday on steep slopes several small and medium-sized avalanches were observed. Several avalanches caused by skiers, of medium and in one case large size, were reported. The sometimes strong wind has transported a lot of snow. In all aspects snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2000 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. Distinct weak layers exist in the bottom section of the old snowpack in all aspects. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas and at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions a little snow is lying.

Tendency

New snow above approximately 900 m.
