Avalanche Activity

The danger of moist and wet avalanches will already exist in the early morning.

The spring-like weather conditions will give rise to a loss of strength within the snowpack below approximately 3100 m. As a consequence of high temperatures, rain up to approximately 2800 m an unfavourable avalanche situation will develop in the course of the day. These meteorological conditions will bring about a substantial rise in the danger of moist and wet avalanches in particular in the regions exposed to substantial precipitation. Especially in starting zones where no previous releases have taken place medium-sized and large moist and wet avalanches are possible. Additionally in very isolated cases avalanches can penetrate near-ground layers of the snowpack. The avalanches can reach intermediate altitudes. The fresh wind slabs are mostly small and to be assessed with care and prudence. They are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls and in the high Alpine regions. Avalanches can be released, even by small loads in isolated cases.

Snowpack Structure

In particular at the border to France 15 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall above approximately 2800 m. The high temperatures on Saturday will give rise to a loss of strength within the snowpack. Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be severely restricted. The spring-like weather conditions will give rise to rapid moistening of the snowpack over a wide area. These conditions will foster a substantial settling of the near-surface layers in particular below approximately 2900 m. Especially at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions a lot of snow is lying. Individual weak layers exist in the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind, especially above approximately 2400 m.

Tendency

As a consequence of the precipitation there will be an increase in the danger of moist and wet avalanches within the current danger level.
