Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs represent the main danger. In particular at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent.

The fresh wind slabs remain in some cases prone to triggering at intermediate and high altitudes. Avalanches can be released in near-surface layers, even by a single winter sport participant, in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls along the border with France and in the regions neighbouring those that are subject to danger level 3 (considerable). As a consequence of warming during the day and the solar radiation, the likelihood of moist avalanches being released will increase gradually on very steep sunny slopes below approximately 2800 m. On extreme slopes and in steep rocky terrain moist loose snow avalanches are possible as the day progresses, but they will be mostly small.

Snowpack Structure

In some localities 15 cm of snow has fallen since Friday above approximately 2500 m. At high altitudes and in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In some cases the various wind slabs have bonded still only poorly with the old snowpack, in particular at high altitude. The wind slabs are covered with new snow in some cases and therefore difficult to recognise. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to gradual moistening of the snowpack below approximately 2800 m. Individual weak layers exist in the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind, especially above approximately 2400 m.

The avalanche danger will persist.
