Wind slabs represent the main danger. In particular at intermediate and high altitudes the avalanche prone locations are more widespread.

10 cm of snow will fall until Tuesday above approximately 2200 m. As a consequence of falling temperatures and the moderate northwesterly wind, the snow drift accumulations will increase in size. They are to be found adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. These are to be found also areas not adjacent to ridgelines. The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in particular on steep north, east and south facing slopes, especially at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. They are to be assessed critically. At high altitude these avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. As a consequence of new snow and wind small and medium-sized dry and moist avalanches are to be expected. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on very steep slopes, and adjacent to ridgelines. They can be released in particular at the base of rock walls.

Snowpack Structure

20 to 40 cm of snow has fallen since Friday above approximately 2400 m. The weather conditions facilitated a gradual settling of the near-surface layers in particular below approximately 2500 m. Especially at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions a lot of snow is lying. The covering of new snow is dry and has a loosely bonded surface. In the last two days on very steep slopes several small and medium-sized avalanches were reported. In some cases the various wind slabs have bonded still only poorly with the old snowpack, in particular at high altitude. Sunshine and high temperatures gave rise to gradual moistening of the old snowpack below approximately 2500 m. Individual weak layers exist in the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind, especially above approximately 2400 m.

Tendency

Slight increase in danger of moist and wet avalanches in the course of the day, in the event of prolonged bright spells especially.
