Avalanche Activity

On steep sunny slopes the likelihood of avalanches being released is greater.

As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation more ground avalanches are possible as the day progresses, but they will be mostly small. In addition there is a danger of moist loose snow avalanches. Gliding avalanches can be released at any time of day or night. The wind slabs can be released, especially by large additional loads, in all aspects above approximately 1800 m. Mostly the avalanches are small. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas the likelihood of avalanches being released is greater.

Snowpack Structure

The snowpack is largely stable; its surface consists of loosely bonded snow. In addition mostly small wind slabs formed adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas. In many cases wind slabs are lying on an icy crust.
