Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Period of poor stability with the onset of milder temperatures after earlier snowfall and drifting. Most affected locations will be steep North-West through North to East aspects above 900m. Recently formed cornices will weaken later. Some minor wet snow instabilities possible on very steep ground as low as 800m during the afternoon. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Distinct weather change in prospect. Snowfall throughout the period, heaviest during the morning, with rain at lower levels from dawn onwards. Freezing level at 700m overnight then rising to summits from morning onwards. Moderate Southerly or South-Westerly winds becoming strong during the morning. Observed Weather Influences: Dry and cold with moderate South-Easterly winds. ObservedSnowStability: Highly variable picture of stability and instability on many lee slopes. In places, near surface instability in softer snow alongside well bonded or crusty older snow. Elsewhere, some mid pack and deeper instability though bridged over by dense, strong layers. Most affected areas are West through North to North-East aspects above 950m. Good stability at all altitudes on East to South-West aspects that have been recently wind scoured. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
