Avalanche Activity

Weakly bonded old snow represents the main danger.

Avalanches can be released in the weakly bonded old snow by a single winter sport participant. This applies in particular on west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 1800 m. Avalanches are medium-sized. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack can indicate the danger. In the regions neighbouring those that are subject to danger level 3 (considerable) the avalanche danger is higher.

Snowpack Structure

10 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall. The new snow will be deposited on a weakly bonded old snowpack. Distinct weak layers exist in the old snowpack.

Tendency

Weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate caution.
