Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised areas of unstable windslab will develop at the start of the period on South-East to South-West aspects and in the afternoon on North-West to North East aspects above 900 metres. The older snowpack will refreeze and have good stability. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Fresh Northerly winds become light early in the morning, veering to the South and becoming strong during the day. Snow showers in the evening and afternoon, mainly dry in between. The freezing level will drop to 500 metres overnight, rising to 800 metres in the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: It was a wet day with gale force South-Westerly winds in the morning easing and veering to the North in the afternoon. The freezing level was above the summits, dropping quickly in the afternoon with rain turning to snow. ObservedSnowStability: Wet snow instabilities were present this morning mainly on steep North through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. Remaining cornices were prone to collapse at this time. In the afternoon the snowpack refroze and stability improved but isolated and shallow areas of unstable windslab started to develop mainly on South-East to South-West aspects above 900 metres. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
