Avalanche Activity

The danger of moist and wet avalanches will increase a little during the day.

Early morning: The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will soften later than the day before. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface. In the course of the day the natural activity of avalanches will gradually increase. In particular in starting zones where no previous releases have taken place and on very steep shady slopes more small and medium-sized natural wet avalanches are possible. The conditions are generally favourable for ski touring. Backcountry tours and ascents to alpine cabins should be concluded timely. The near-surface layers of the snowpack can be released in isolated cases by winter sport participants in particular in extremely steep terrain.

Snowpack Structure

In the last two days the wind was moderate at times especially along the border with France. The weather conditions gave rise to rapid settling of the snowpack. This situation gave rise to moistening of the snowpack below approximately 2500 m. The amount of snow is subject to significant local variations. In particular below the tree line hardly any snow is lying on southeast and southwest facing slopes. Especially at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions there is still a very large amount of snow. Weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes.

As the temperature drops only isolated moist and wet avalanches are possible.
