Avalanche Activity

CM for 25.2 Unstable windslab mainly on N-E-SE aspects above 800m. Also other aspects and lower. Fragile cornices. Haz Considerable

Forecast Snow Stability: Extensive unstable windslab will be present in wind-sheltered areas, with greatest accumulations on North through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. Fragile cornice will exist above these aspects. More localised windslab will also be present on other aspects and at lower altitudes. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight winds will be Westerly or West-North-Westerly, strong at first then gradually easing to be light during the morning. During the day winds will back South-South-Westerly and strengthen again. Snowfall is expected overnight at all levels, then a dry day. During the day the freezing level will rise from 400 metres to around 700 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Winds were strong mainly West-South-Westerly. Snowfall at all levels continued through the day. The freezing level was around 300 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Fresh unstable windslab continues to be deposited in wind-sheltered areas. Greatest accumulations are on North through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. Fragile cornices continue to build above these aspects. Windslab is also present on other aspects due to cross loading and on steep slopes at lower altitudes. The surface of the old snowpack is refrozen. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
