    With time, existing wind slabs will be trending to being more stubborn to trigger but it is still too soon after the storm to write them off. Watch for signs of blowing snow, fresh cornices, pillow drifts, and wavy surface texture as signs that slopes are wind loaded. Wind loading tends to happen below ridgetops, and high points and along features that catch snow blowing across a slope.

    Light amounts of blowing snow were reported at ridgetops on Saturday and new wind slabs may continue to build in pockets of terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

On Saturday, several skier triggered size D1 wind slab avalanches were reported from north and northeast facing slopes near treeline. There were also reports of cracking on wind loaded slopes on north and east aspects. Recent avalanches are the number one sign that avalanches are possible.

Observers on Saturday reported the recent storm snow is bonding well to the 12/22 rain crust. 

The cold night time low temperatures should keep the recent snow in good condition, and we may even get some 'recycled pow', also known as faceted snow.  

As always, watch for pockets of unstable snow, even in terran where we are not expecting avalanches to happen.
