In sintesi

As the sun and warmer weather heat things up today, sluffs of wet loose snow will become possible on steep slopes. Some of these could entrain enough wet snow to cause problems for backcountry travelers especially on long steep slopes or in areas with terrain traps. Some isolated upper elevation areas in complex or extreme terrain may still hold difficult but not impossible to trigger hard slabs of wind drifted snow. The avalanche danger is MODERATE today.

    The combination of strong sunshine, much warmer daytime temperatures, and less wind will cause enough warming for a layer of wet unconsolidated snow to form on the surface in many places. On steep slopes, this wet loose snow could slide down the slope entraining more wet snow as it moves. These wet loose snow avalanches typically start small (D1) but could grow large enough to cause problems (D2) on long steep slopes or in areas where terrain traps like cliffs, gullies, trees, etc magnify the consequences of any size avalanche. Sunny E-SE-S-SW-W aspects should experience the most warming and will be most prone to having wet snow on them. While the northerly aspects should experience less warming, wet snow may form on some of those aspects as well due to the high sun angles at this time of year and warm temperatures. Today's warming could also start to weaken cornices that survived the NE wind event.

    The conditions will change quickly today. Be alert for signs of wet snow instabilities like rollerballs, pinwheels, wet sticky snow, or ankle-deep wet snow. These clues mean it's time to move to a colder aspect without wet snow or switch to lower angle slopes where the wet snow won't slide downhill easily.

    Hard slabs of wind drifted snow may still lurk on some isolated slopes loaded by the intense NE winds. Most of these should be small and triggering one of them has become unlikely. Still, some instability is not impossible on an isolated terrain feature, especially where the hard slab is thinner or in more complex terrain like couloirs, hanging snowfields, cliffy areas, unsupported slopes, and steep convex rollovers. These hard slabs mostly formed on the NW-W-SW-S-SE aspects in near and above treeline terrain.

    (3/26/2021) W facing test slopes did show some signs of instability on Carson Pass.

Avalanche Discussion

* Wind scoured and sculpted surfaces are widespread across the forecast area. N-NE-E aspects are especially scoured. Wind-affected snow surfaces exist at all elevations and in traditionally sheltered areas.

* Melt-freeze crusts exist on top of transistional snow on sun-exposed E-SE-S-SW-W aspects. Strong NE-E winds kept these slopes firm and frozen yesterday.

* Hard wind slabs that vary in thickness exist on some slopes loaded by the NE winds. Yesterday these did not extend very far away from ridgelines. Some of the wind slabs exhibited signs of instability like cracking or unstable snowpit test results yesterday, but most of the wind-loaded areas did not show signs of significant instability.
